UBS's new MD list: "There are no big surprises here"

UBS isn't commenting, but in European investment banking (excluding capital markets), we understand that only a few people were promoted: Alexander Bernhardt, Rubaina Khan, Soban Khawaja, Loris Dell’Andrino, Paul Finlayson and Saurav Sen.

Bernhardt is on the Swiss coverage team. Khan is a managing director on the bank's consumer and luxury team. Khawaja is on the London banking team. So are Dell'Andrino, Finlayson and Sen.

The new EMEA banking MDs have been at UBS for many years and had been executive directors there for a while. "There are big surprises here," says one insider. "No stars." Notably, there is also no one who joined from Credit Suisse.

Nor is there anyone who joined from Credit Suisse on the list of new London MDs in research. However, there are plenty of names who've joined from elsewhere in the recent past. They include: Luke Taylor, the head of client advisory strategy, who joined from Deutsche Bank in 2020; Guillaume Delmas, who joined from Bank of America; Will Hardcastle, who joined from Citadel; and Gerry Fowler, the head of European equity strategy who joined from Aberdn. Fowler joined in 2022. Taylor, Delmas and Hardastle joined in 2020. One ED who isn't on the list described the new research MDs as "extraordinary colleagues", suggesting that UBS did well poaching them from elsewhere.

There are 174 people in total on UBS's new MD list. This is down from 177 people last year. Executive directors at the bank have been complaining that the process for getting promoted is opaque and increasingly competitive since the acquisition of Credit Suisse.

In the US, the list of new banking MDs includes Graham Johnson and Dan Wetzell, both of whom joined from Barclays last June. Their ascension was likely aided by the fact that UBS has hired various other senior investment bankers from Barclays, including Marco Valla, co-president of the investment bank.

Other US investment bankers on the MD list below include: Michael Zhaka (a UBS lifer); Neeraj Dhanoa (an industrials banker and UBS lifer); Josh Sheets (a tech banker and UBS lifer); Mike Doherty (who joined from Morgan Stanley in 2021); Jason Leopold (who's spent 10 years at UBS in Toronto) and Nick Rossi. Rossi, who is based in LA and was once a 'nuclear surface warfare officer' stands out as being the only new banking MD to come from Credit Suisse.
