Associate, Investment Banking - Financial Institutions Group

What You'll Be Doing:

Our Investment Bank supports corporate and private capital clients with strategic advice and corporate finance advisory services (such as mergers and acquisitions) as well as debt and equity capital raising. Our vision is to be a key investment banking and capital markets banking partner to our clients, across multiple products and services.

The Financial Institutions Investment Banking ("FIG") team has deep sector expertise and proven deal execution capabilities, combined with a full suite of investment banking capital markets solutions, as well as corporate banking, treasury services and risk management solutions from other groups within CIBC Capital Markets, which allow us to assist at every stage of our FIG clients' business lifecycle. As an experienced FIG team in this dynamic and rapidly changing industry, we have the capabilities to advise, structure and finance a broad array of notable and complex transactions in the US.

Our group focuses on a broad set of financial institutions clients in a variety of subsectors, including insurance, specialty finance, and asset & wealth management, among others. Our ecosystem is fast-changing and the successful applicant will assist our clients in many capacities including strategic mergers and acquisitions and financings across debt and equity markets.

With guidance from Managing Directors and/or Executive Directors, you will complete assignments that impact the firm's bottom line through deal execution, client relationship support, industry and company analysis, and overall communication and collaboration with banking partners across our global offices. The role will provide you with significant learning opportunities and an ability to observe and influence the strategic direction of our clients' businesses, with direct exposure to client executives and boards of directors as well as senior CIBC leadership.

How You'll Succeed:

As an Associate on the US FIG team, you will provide a broad range of analytical, research, and presentation support to senior bankers within the group. You will work across a variety of transactions and advisory mandates, requiring strong prioritization and multitasking capabilities.

Applying your quantitative strengths to lead complex financial analyses and models - while distilling the "big picture" implications - will be critical to your success. You will also gain exposure to colleagues across the firm globally, with a team-oriented approach designed to provide progressive on-the-job training.

Deal Execution & Advisory:
  • Lead the execution of all facets of the group's mandates and overall priorities
  • Conduct industry research and analysis to identify and evaluate investment banking opportunities across FIG subsectors, including insurance, specialty finance, and asset & wealth management
  • Act as the central point of contact between the deal team and client team members throughout transaction execution
  • Conduct deal-related due diligence activities and present findings internally and directly to clients
  • Lead and oversee financial modeling and other financial analyses, providing recommendations to internal and client stakeholders
  • Assist senior investment banking colleagues in identifying opportunities for fee-paying mandates
  • Ensure all recommendations and opinions offered to clients comply with applicable legislation and uphold CIBC's professional standards and policies

Client Coverage & Industry Intelligence
  • Identify and anticipate client needs, delivering excellent service through coverage and transaction execution
  • Research, develop, and maintain a thorough understanding of clients' businesses, investments, and industries to support the identification and analysis of investment banking opportunities
  • Liaise with other CIBC units in preparing client RFPs and proposals
  • Keep the team informed of material developments in the industry and markets in which our clients operate
  • Conduct client meetings alongside other CIBC team members

Relationship Building
  • Coordinate client- and deal-focused internal brainstorming sessions with relevant team members and product specialists
  • Develop relationships and actively communicate with key contacts at client organizations
  • Build and maintain an internal network across product groups and other business lines
  • Cultivate and maintain an external network with key market stakeholders and prospects
  • Support CIBC's profile through involvement in community activities
  • Actively manage and mentor Analysts, providing regular coaching, teaching, and feedback

Who You Are:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Economics, Engineering or related discipline
  • Knowledge of corporate finance / M&A through education, training and experience
  • At least 2 years of FIG (insurance / specialty finance) investment banking coverage experience; candidates with FIG M&A (insurance / specialty finance) experience are also encouraged to apply
  • Demonstrated quantitative, computational, and financial modeling skills, including a thorough understanding of valuation techniques, cash flow analysis, and corporate finance theories and practices
  • Excellent understanding of financial statements, credit analysis, and accounting principles
  • Strong interest in and knowledge of financial markets and the financial institutions sector, including specialty finance, financial technology, insurance, and asset & wealth management
  • Well-developed time management skills with the ability to manage shifting priorities across multiple simultaneous projects and meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and represent CIBC's interests professionally
  • Proven ability to contribute to and thrive within high-performance teams
  • Results-oriented with the initiative to take ownership of projects and drive them forward
  • Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work and you live our values - trust, teamwork, and accountability.
